King’s Place: Burgers Truly Fit For A King
July 18, 2009 by chrisbrummund

A couple weeks ago, I made a trip south on Highway 61 to a little town called Miesville.  It’s just south of
Hastings and west of Red Wing.  Miesville is famous for two things: Jack Ruhr Field, home of the Miesville
Mudhens amateur baseball team, and King’s Place.  There wasn’t a game on this afternoon (which was okay
since I got my share of baseball the night before at the Metrodome), so we made our way to King’s Place to
grab some world famous burgers.
I first heard of this place a couple months ago while watching Channel 5’s On The Road with Jason Davis.
He made his way around to some great looking restaurants located in small Minnesota towns.  I intend to
visit all of these locations some day, but I knew that King’s Place was going to be the one I visit first.

We got seated in a booth and put in our drink order.  I was in the mood for a nice, cold lager on this sunny
4th of July, so I ordered a bottle of Grain Belt Premium.  When Lisa asked the waitress what they had on
tap, my ears perked up when she mentioned Hamm’s.  It’s not every day you find a place with Hamm’s on
tap, so I immediately changed my order to a tall glass of Hamm’s.  Ryan also followed suit.

We then began to peruse the menus.  I wish I would have taken a snapshot of one, because they don’t
have their menu posted on the website.  King’s Place is not just famous because of the quality of their
burgers (which is exceptionally high), but also because of the quantity of their burgers.  They have over 40
different kinds of burgers!  Each burger has a name that is either related to baseball or chess.  It’s an odd
combination of themes, and in retrospect, I wish I would have done some research as to why the chess
theme was selected.
We all placed our orders and this is what we chose:

Ryan – “Bases Loaded” – smothered in salsa, cheddar cheese, sour cream, jalepenos, lettuce, and probably
even more stuff that I can’t remember.

Emily and Lisa – “The Catcher” –  almost a breakfast-y burger topped with cheese, bacon, fried & seasoned
potato, and sour cream.

Chris (that’s me) – “The No-Hitter” – topped with swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and a hot dog.  Once you’ve
had a burger topped with a hot dog, you’ll never go back.

This was definitely a worthwhile trip (about a 30-45 minute drive from Minneapolis).  What made it even
better was the prices.  All of the burgers were $5 or less, the fries were about $2, and the giant glass of
Hamm’s was around $3.  You get yourself a heck of a meal for just about $10.

I have every intention on returning there this summer.  Perhaps this time I’ll have to check out some of the
other area attractions like a Mudhens game or a canoe trip down the Cannon River.

Hi there, I've been to King's a bunch of times now
and I seriously believe it is the best burger place in
Minnesota.  I love the staff and the burgers are
simply amazing.  I love the Hamm's on tap too, my
grandfather used to add a pinch of salt to his
Hamm's beer so my friends and I continue the
tradition every time we show up to Kings.  Thanks
for the good times!!
